For my entire life (decades and decades of it), I’ve had this awful coat hanger in my wardrobe. As a kid, as a teenager, as an adult.

This awkward looking coat hanger with its double metal clips would catch on other hangers and on other clothes in my wardrobe. It never sat straight, always on an angle. Snagging scarfs, tangling up with belts. The clips on it are too tight as well, making it almost impossible to open them to hang clothes on. I remember making a comment about it as a kid and mum told me that it saved space.

So I kept it. And I kept it. Disdainfully moving it to the end of my wardrobe so that it didn’t catch on so many clothes. I’d hang skirts on it that I never wore.

I went to hang a skirt on it this morning when a light bulb moment occurred.

Get rid of it.

That’s what I can do. After all these decades, I can just t h r o w out the awful coat hanger.

Like… put it in the bin.

Never have to lay eyes on it again.

Today is a great day people, I threw out that blasted coat hanger. Gone. Adios. Sayonara.

Last weekend I visited the Elisabeth Cummings exhibition at S.H. Ervin Gallery, at the National Trust of Australia (NSW). Cummings is an incredibly talented Australian artist who flies quietly under the radar, relatively unknown in comparison to her creative peers. The exhibition is a survey of 50 years of her work. The paintings are mostly landscapes, big luminous colours and impasto surfaces. Outback Australia features heavily in her landscape work.

What struck me about the work is the incredible balance she finds on her canvases. Eratic shapes, bold colours and textured surfaces somehow come together in a peaceful interesting conversation. Her works don’t yell out to you, they invite you in to absorb their colours, to feel comforted by her incredible balance and to feel the landscapes seeping out from within the canvas.

The works really don’t translate in photo the way they do when you stand before these large beauties. I highly recommend going along. The exhibition runs until the 12 February and costs just $7. It is beautiful up at Observatory Hill, do yourself favour and get up there for some fresh air, the view of the harbour and one of Australia’s great female painters – Elisabeth Cummings.

Below are some examples of her work, I’m not sure if all of these were in the show (photography is not allowed at S.H.Ervin Gallery). But the images will give you an idea of her style.

Hi everyone – thanks for your interest. The vases sold today. My mum often sells batches of vintage glassware, she’ll probably have a smaller batch of vases ready for sale in a couple of months time. So feel free to email me (jacintafleur [at] gmail [dot] com or contact me through the comments on this blog and I can let you know when the next batch is up for grabs.
x jacinta

**
I have 50 vases from my wedding to sell as one batch for $275. They are a mix of glass vases, milk jugs, antique perfume bottles, newer vases and older crystal vases. Only one of the vases has a small chip on it but other than that they are in good condition. Some of the vases need a rinse as they’ve been getting a little dusty in my shed.

It took my mother and I months of driving around second hand shops and scouring e-bay for affordable vases. The vases originally cost between $3 to $8 each. They weren’t easy to find, so we believe this is a good deal.

If you decide to buy them you will need to pick the vases up from Sydney’s inner west, please contact me via jacintafleur [at] gmail.com

Let me know if you would like to see high res images and I’ll email some through.

I’ll update this post when they are sold.

***
I thought I’d put this on my blog for Sydney brides in 2012 who might be looking for wedding vases, wedding jars and crystal vases for a vintage styled wedding. I have two boxes of vases that my mother is planning to resell (she can’t possibly hold onto that many vases!). Please contact me through the comments section of this post if you are looking to buy wedding vases.
